What to Plant in the Fall

If you don’t know much about planting, you probably think that spring is the only time to plant in your outdoor space. In fact, planting is a fall activity as well. If you're wondering what you can plant in the fall, the answer is almost anything. The window for fall planting ends about six weeks before your area gets hit with a hard frost, usually September or October. Here are examples of six plant types that Better Homes and Gardens suggests to put in the ground during the fall.

  1. Spring Bulbs - Planting these in the fall will ensure a beautiful spring display.
  2. Pansies - You will get 2 seasons of these while removing the spent flowers so the plant doesn't use its energy to set seeds, and keep the soil moist.
  3. Cool Season Vegetables - Plant lettuce, spinach and other greens with a short maturity time and you can even extend their growing season by shielding the plants from frost under floating covers to still allow light, air and water.
  4. Turfgrass - Fall and cooler weather is the best time to establish new turfgrass and do most lawn chores.
  5. Trees and Shrubs - Since the weather has cooled off, the soil is warm enough for root development and keep watered until the ground freezes.
  6. Perennials - Water carefully until the ground freezes to keep their roots healthy and strong. Don't overwater, but make sure the plants get at least 1 inch of water one time per week to these fall-planted beauties.
