Make Your Move Easier ( What You Want To Know Wednesdays )

Preparing for a move can be overwhelming and stressful. You do not realize how much stuff you’ve accumulated until you have to pack and organize it all. Do you really need that sweater from 7 years ago that smells like mothballs? Thankfully, there are several helpful tips to make your moving day as seamless as possible!

  1. Prep early – Start decluttering about 2 weeks before your move. You will have time to go through everything and decide what you want to keep and what you do not want to keep. Once you have less to pack, the experience will be less intimidating and overwhelming.
  2. Start packing – Be weary of packing too early. You do not want to live out of boxes longer than you have to. A week should be a doable time frame to pack up your house once the purging process is finished – but if it takes longer, don’t stress!
  3. Organize your home as you go – Make sure to move room to room while you pack and make sure each box only contains items from one room.   Adding items from multiple rooms in one box can cause extra work in the long haul.  It is beneficial to keep items together that should be together, for example, all of your cleaning supplies can go in the same box or container so when you’re ready to unpack at your new home you can just pop the container in its new place.
  4. Labels – Labels will be your very best friend when you are unpacking boxes. Label each box by room, or if you are a super organized person, inventory what is in each box and give each box a number.
  5. Unpack with a time frame – Give yourself a reasonable goal to work towards while you enjoy the fruits of your new home.
