Summer time is here and your AC bill is climbing. Proper insulation can make a world of difference in your home. Eliminating air leaks in and out of your home is a great way to save money and make your home more comfortable. Up to 25% of your cool or warm air can escape through your windows! Reduce air leakage in your home with these tips:

Caulk – Caulk is a flexible material you can seal leaks with. It works best for cracks, or joints less than 1 quarter inch wide. Caulking compounds vary in strength, properties and prices. Check out this graph on what kind of caulking compound will work for your needs. Caulking can also prevent water damage inside and outside of the home.

Weatherstripping – An excellent option to seal air leaks around moveable objects, like doors. You’ll want to choose weatherstripping that can withstand friction and natural elements. Like caulk, there are several options for weatherstripping. Here is a graph to help determine what material will best suit your needs.

Shutters – Shutters can prevent air from escaping through window coverings and the glass of the window.
