Cut Your Winter Energy (What You Want To Know Wednesdays)

With cooler weather upon us, our utility bills can be on the rise.  Homeowners have the freedom to make their homes as energy efficient as possible, while renters may not have the same opportunities.   Fortunately, there are still options out there to make your home energy efficient.   The following tips apply to homeowners and renters.

Smart Power Strip – Some appliances can still use energy even when they are turned off.  An easy solution is to use a smart power strip.  Smart power strips shut down the power to appliances when they are not in use.

Give Your Appliances a Tune Up – Make sure your appliances are running at optimal levels.  Check your fridge and freezer to make sure they are running at the right temperatures.   You can also lower the heat on your water heater to 120 degrees.   However, do not go below 120 degrees, bacteria can grow.   An easy fix is to avoid running your dishwasher, washer, and dryer before 7 pm.

Change Your Air Filters - Keeping your filter clean is not only good for your body; it’s good for your wallet!

Check Into Power Company and Government Programs -   You could be eligible to receive a rebate for updating your appliances.  It never hurts to ask!  Speak with your landlord as well.
