12 Brilliant Ways To Keep Your Home Cool Without Air Conditioning

Summer is officially here and will only get hotter as the summer goes on. Instead of just running the AC 24/7, try one or all of these helpful ways to keep your home cool without the use of air conditioning to keep you and your family cool.

  1. Keep your blinds closed. Simply closing your blinds saves up to 30 percent of unwanted heat from coming in your windows.
  2. Be smart about your doors. Closing off unused rooms will prevent the cool from escaping during the hottest part of the day.
  3. Hack a fan instead of turning on the AC. Simply fill a mixing bowl of ice and place in front of a large fan creating an extra chilled and misty temperature breeze.
  4. Swap your sheets. Pack up those flannel sheets and fleece blankets for cotton ones in order to stay cooler.
  5. Set your ceiling fans to rotate counter-clockwise. Your ceiling fan needs to be adjusted seasonally so make sure your fan is set to counter-clockwise in the summer to create a chilled breeze.
  6. Focus on the temperature in your body, not the house. Sipping tasty cold or iced drinks and being smart about your clothing choices can keep you cool in the heat too.
  7. Turn on your bathroom fans. Both bathroom and kitchen fans help pull out hot air that rise after showers or cooking.
  8. Heat-proof your bed. Try a cool-inducing pillow or put a frozen water bottle at the foot of your bed.
  9. Let the night air in. Temperatures may drop during the night during the summer months so be sure to crack open the windows for a nice refreshing breeze.
  10. Ditch the incandescent lights. Simply upgrading your light bulbs can save about 90 percent of the energy in their heat.
  11. Start grilling. Using the stove or oven definitely heats up your house, so start grilling and keep your house cool.
  12. Make a few long-term improvements. Other long term improvements for your home include insulated window films, outdoor awnings, adding more trees to help shield your home from the heat.
